A majority of Americans (72 percent) believe that mass shootings can be prevented if an effort is made. This follows the results of a poll conducted by CBS News television channel.
At the same time, the survey revealed that Republicans are more inclined than Democrats to consider such incidents an integral part of a “free society” that should be reconciled with.
Democrats suggested more vetting of gun purchasers, banning semiautomatic weapons, introducing laws allowing guns to be removed from people deemed dangerous to society or themselves by a court, and more attention to identifying and treating mental disorders as ways to reduce mass shootings.
For their part, Republicans felt that to reduce the number of such incidents, more attention should be paid to identifying and treating mental disorders, more police and security guards in public places, more religiosity among the public, and more law-abiding citizens should be allowed to carry guns.
On June 5, three people were killed in a shooting outside a bar in the American city of Chattanooga, Tannesee. Also that day, three people were killed and at least 12 others were injured in a shooting on the streets of the city of Philadelphia in the United States. Emergency services recorded information about the shooting around midnight local time.
Earlier, U.S. President Joe Biden said the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees the right to buy and bear firearms, “is not absolute.” The American leader made this statement during a televised address to his fellow citizens in connection with recent mass shootings in the United States.
